Traditional teaching methods have a lot of merit, which is why textbooks, worksheets and chalkboards persist in today's classrooms. Along with engaging and effective teaching methods, these tools can provide kids with the building blocks that they need in many subjects throughout their early school careers. But with technology now being an integral part of everyday life, it can be beneficial to add math games for first graders to the elementary school curriculum. Including an interactive online learning experience not only boosts kids' mathematical proficiency, it also helps them to learn the basic computer skills necessary to achieve success in today's society. And though math games may move at a quicker pace than traditional classroom instruction, they still require kids to focus and pay attention to lessons so that basic skills can be mastered and concepts properly understood before more advanced ideas are introduced.

The answer for the above question is hidden in a simple example. I always give the example of stairs to my students, and giving the same example in this article. I compare the steps of a staircase to the concepts in mathematics. As this is very hard to reach higher floors of a building without stairs (or elevators these days), same way learn higher concepts in mathematics without learning basic concepts is very hard.

It was easy because of my upbringing that ensured that math and I got acquainted long before school. My mother who was a primary grade teacher told me how she began teaching me math in different guises at home before I got to school age.

Patterns and sequencing and basic addition and subtraction should follow on from counting and number recognition. By the time your child is starting kindergarten or school, they should be able to count to 20 with ease, write numbers, do simple addition sums, and have some understanding of patterns and sequences. Even if they are attending preschool, extra practice at home will help them improve their math.

At the fourth grade level, and perhaps earlier, your child needs to be an expert on fractions. Anything and everything. Again, worksheets and extra instruction are probably a must. This will be an impossible task if your child has not followed through on tip #5 above.

Start early. Before your child goes to preschool, they need to be familiar with small numbers, up to 10. Two is easy to teach and point out. Pair of socks, shoes, etc. Five fingers on a hand and toes on feet. Ten total fingers and toes.
